Why Smoke Detectors Are So Important

1/21/2021 (Permalink)

JUST THE FACTS: Smoke Alarms

It is so important that you check your smoke alarms.According to the U.S. Fire Administration, smoke detectors should be tested at least once a month and batteries should be replaced at least once or twice a year.

Smoke detectors also lose their efficiency after 10 years so make sure to stay on top of replacing all your smoke detectors as well.

  • Three out of five fire deaths occur in homes with no smoke alarms or when the alarms are not working.
  • Smoke alarm failures usually result from missing, disconnected, or dead batteries.
  • More than one-third (37 percent) of home fire deaths result from fires in which no smoke alarms are present.
  • The risk of dying in a home fire is cut in half in homes with working smoke alarms.
